There is an art to science, and a science in art; the two are not enemies, but rather different aspects of the whole.
-Isaac Asimov
Creative Scientists is a student-led publication dedicated to promoting creative approaches to scientific communication and exploring the intersection of art and science.

Founded on the idea that all art is science and all science is art, Creative Scientists serves the student, staff, and faculty body at California State University, Monterey Bay by providing a low-stakes, low-barrier opportunity to publish creative works related to science and STEM.

Creative Scientists takes an intentionally broad approach to the definition of creative works, spanning drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, slide decks, essays, creative writing, poetry, 3D modelling, even creatively drafted notes pages. Did you see a cool bug and snap a photo? It counts!

In short, the goal of Creative Scientists is to explore the beauty, fascination, and creativity inherent in science that can be so easily forgotten. Explorations of the self as a scientist and a community member are welcome, research materials are welcome, creative class assignments are welcome. If it is a creative work related to science, we want it!

FAQ:
I'm not a STEM major, can I still submit?

Yes! As long as you can define the work as scientifically related, it is welcome. Our definition of science is similarly broad and goes beyond traditional STEM delineations to include humanities and social sciences, if you feel it is science-related, it counts.

I'm not a good artist, can I still submit?

There is no such thing as good or bad art. The entire goal of Creative Scientists is to showcase the joy of science and the joy of art, you don't need to be technically skilled for it to bring joy. Everything from a photo of a doodle on a lined notebook page to a detailed technical piece is accepted. If you are feeling shy about being associated with your work, we have the option to have your work published anonymously.

My creative work started as a class assignment/class notes, can I submit it?

Yes, you can still submit it, however we ask that you wait to submit it until after it has been graded or the specific topic in your class has passed. This is to avoid any possibility that your work will be plagiarized.

Can I list publications on my CV/resume?

Yes! You should identify Creative Scientists as a student-led publication for creative scientific works.

Who retains the rights to my work?

You do! You give Creative Scientists explicit permission to publish your work in our submission process, but the creative rights (copyright, trademark, etc.) remain entirely with you. Similarly, you may request to have your work removed from Creative Scientists at any time. Creative Scientists gets no financial gain from the publication of your work.

I would like to use a work I see in Creative Scientists for my own purposes, can I do that?

Creative Scientists only requests permission for the work to be displayed in Creative Scientists materials, they have not given permission for their work to be used elsewhere. However, some may have given more details. Please contact us and we will see what can be done.

I would like to volunteer to work for Creative Scientists, how do I do that?

Please do! Volunteering with Creative Scientists counts as student leadership experience that can be added to your CV/resume and we have plenty of opportunities from graphic design to event planning to social media management. Because this is a new publication there are limitless possibilities for ways to contribute.
